The Story
In a cave touched by morning light for only a few moments each day, Mono guarded a crystal. It was neither the largest nor the brightest, yet the little golem held it in both hands as though it sheltered an entire world.
One day, a traveller asked why he did not search for a more precious treasure. Mono lifted his single eye and told him about the evening he had found the crystal. Lost in the darkness, he had noticed a moonbeam caught inside it. Following the light to a crack in the rock, he had discovered the way out and, beyond it, the path home.
“To you, it is only a stone,” Mono said. “To me, it is the memory of finding a way.”
The traveller sat quietly for a while. Then he took an old button from his pocket, kept from his grandfather's coat, and smiled. Mono made room beside him. That morning, the cave had two guardians of stories.
Ever since, Mono has held his crystal close, reminding those he meets that some treasures are measured by what they help us remember, rather than by how brightly they shine.
